I would have thought getting a proper domain would increase your rank rather than use blogspot.

true, but even that fails on blogspot to see if the blog goes if at 1,000,000 in Alexa, or <.... I'll buy domain

But it will go better than that figure having your own domain and hosting. ($15 for first month then $3 per month)

If you get the site seo'd and you get the visits then there is no way if will stay at that figure.
