Googlebot and closed forums

If a forum is closed to guests can the google bot see the thread content

no....however there are mods to get around this

lol yes there is a way.. there should be 2 different groups. 1 for guests, 1 for bots... diable access for guests... enable it for bots.. easy as that

Yes, phpbb3 has a separated groups for bots and guests. If you have VIP, Staff Section or something like that don't allow bots there because someone could change "user-agent" at browser to bot and he will be able to see all sections like bots(including VIP / Staff if you allowed bots there)

If Google can see content that unregistered users can't, this is called cloaking.
Your site will then eventually be Google banned.

This technique is used by a lot of sites. particularly sites with links, which in order to see you will need to register..
Google's cache is a way around it. But usually i only do that if the next 2 or 3 sites on the list dont contain what i want.
