Open forums will generate better traffic, and will produce a better community (eventually), because most of your members have decided that they like the site and registered.. not just leechers, get links then go away.

Members which like your forum will register. It's better to get good members than a bunch or shitty members.

I opened my forum about 1 or 2 months ago. best thing ive done.
Registration barely fell, and i actually have users that login everyday. They dont talk, but im sure its only a matter of time.

If you close it then your numbers will go up but you will have people that havnt logged in for 6 months
My site was closed then I opened it

We had 120k members
I pruned ones that hadnt logged in for over a year that left me at 22k and now ALL 22k Login woot

Opening your forum doesn't really bring that much traffic in terms of google traffic you have to do some basic SEO so you can actually get on the first page otherwise your traffic will be taken by sites like warezscene and freshwap which always come out on top whenever im searching for programs. Personally I would keep it all open and if your going to close some sections make sure guests can't see them there's nothing more frustrating then seeing a big chunk of forums that all say "private".

I opened one of my forums for a test traffic was good we eventually got members we also had a shitload of traffic.
