Category list in header wordpress

I need to create an index on the header of my wordpress site that is similar to the one below and is an alphabetical list of categories

i.e. clicking on C will take the user to list of categories starting with C

can this be done in wordpress?

this plugin says that

Edit the category templates your Theme uses, such as category.php

whereas i have no category template at all in my theme, where should i place the code then?

That file is not from themes. It's from the core WP files, look for it inside the wp-includes folder

i tried editing the category.php on my own but it messed the theme up, can you have a look on where i should place this in category.php, here is the code of category.php

the site is offline on my pc, but when i tried adding the code the site goes offline with an error like error in line 48 Syntax
