Do you use Grid system or prefer Freestyle?

I usually go for freestyle because I first design on paper then go for actual designing in photoshop. It helps to have a clear vision of what you're going to do ahead.

I use both, but as you, I like to sketch it first on paper.

i just open illustrator and let my imagination flow
no grids no paper sketch
