First thing you should learn is performing basic actions through SSH:

-Keeping your box up-to-date
-Rebooting the complete box, httpd/lighttpd/... , SQL, PHP, ...
-Securing your box

na, not really. at first it can be hard, but once you play around and read up on a few things, you catch on fast.

I highly recommend that you use LightTPD on your VPS, as it consumes less RAM and can execute dynamic pages *much* faster than Apache.
