if whole vps and you do use linux try rsync

For database:

mysqldump -A –user=mysqlLogin –password=mysqlPass > database_name.sql;

this will create a dump of all your tables

then

tar -czf database_name.tar.gz database_name.sql;

this will make a gzip archive or your db which you can download
