It doesn't matter how much you put in your pc in any given time any amount added is going to increase your speed exponentially

well it's true if your mainboard has dual channel capability,
then it's best to put two identical sticks than a single stick

Preferably to install similar ram modules at once. Different ram module MIGHT cause stability issue.

    here's my dad's pc (factory made/bought)
    First slot: 1gb
    Second slot: 1gb
    Third: 512 mb
    Fourth: 512 mb

    Looks like this: 1 | 1 | 512 | 512
    or it might be 1 | 512 | 1 | 512 (I doubt)

    It sucks balls too

    me on the other hand
out of the 4 slots i have one stick 1 gb

See there are tech rules. If you put to difft frequency RAMS on a same motherboard, ur PC gonna irritate u. So just match the frequency. When u buy buy same frequency RAM as the old one. coz now a days DR3 666mhz RAMs are there.
