Default Disney And Warner Bros. Attack Piracy Website Sponsors

In a new angle to attack the myriad of websites that offer or promote pirated material the movie studios are going to hit them where it hurts, in the sponsors.

A new lawsuit targeting an advertising company that provides services to such sites has been launched. Disney and Warner Bros have joined forces to sue Triton Media Inc. The two movie studios have clearly decided that it's not enough to go after pirate sites for making a buck off of copyrighted works thanks to advertising. Now, they think the ad companies should be responsible, too, for not being careful about whom they do business with.

They are accusing Triton of both contributory and induced copyright infringement because Triton helps to keep the sites alive by providing them with advertising and referral income. They claim both sides allegedly profited from the distribution of pirated works, and Triton made it possible by offering "material assistance" to the websites.

Disney and Warner allege that Triton has partnerships with at the very least nine sites they consider to be "one-stop-shops" for illegal copies of published works. Their hit list is made up of predominantly no-name sites, such as thepiratecity.org, watch-movies-links.net, and free-tv-video-online.info among 6 others.

The movie studios say that Triton should be held liable for copyright infringement because of its involvement with the sites?doubly so because Triton supposedly knew the alleged illegal activity thanks to notices sent by Warner and Disney.
