If you want perfomance and a easy way to install stuff I'd say Debian. If you need a lot of online documentation CentOS. Don't know about FreeBSD. Overall I'd say go with Debian.

As Your taking server 1st time ( Though you haven't mentioned VPS or dedicated) . My common answer would be go with CentOS 5.4 X86 OS , As its friendly compared to other linux OS`s .. ( Friendly : Need not install separate dependencies , etc as other OS`s need sometime)
