I had 500 when I had an error .htaccess file.

I got 503's all the time when I was hosted with http://altushost.com/ thanks to their oversold servers.

check your error logs, and you will find the reason

First, make sure you have all your vbulletin php files chmod to 644. If the're not, then chmod to 644. Also, like desiboy said, make sure .htaccess is set to 644 as well.

If all else fails, delete the current .htaccess file and upload the one that comes with vbulletin. Sometimes you may have a bad line in there that the server doesn't understand.
