Hmm... it's pretty straight forward.

You just need to rent a shared host/VPS. They'll send you then some URLs and login credentials so you can access to your 'server' and to the administrative panel - such as cPanel.

Probably you won't even need to access the FTP, if you only want to install WordPress, if Fantastico is available, but if you do, just download an FTP Client - I like CuteFTP - and use the login credentials you got in your email address to upload the WordPress files.

It's really easy, you'll nail it pretty fast, don't sweat it.
