MemberYeah i'd go for a 1gb Ram setup and still optimize the VPS, Apache, php and MySQL etc.

Upgrading will help your vps.
with only half a ram is not really a great idea. Maybe anything from 1GB-2GB would be fine.

I have tried using LightTPD instead of Apache and the memory usage was significantly reduced.
