130 Pakistani soldiers buried by avalanche

REPORTING FROM ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- A rescue effort began Saturday to save 130 Pakistani soldiers buried in an avalanche in a Himalayan region close to the Indian border, authorities said.

The soldiers were deployed on the Siachen Glacier, located on the far northern end of the disputed Kashmir region that is claimed by both India and Pakistan.

The avalanche completely covered a battalion outpost in the region’s Gayari district at about 5:45 a.m.

Situated at an elevation of about 22,000 feet, the Siachen region is known as the world’s highest battlefield. India also has troops deployed in the region.

As of Saturday morning there was no word on casualties, Pakistan’s Geo television reported, quoting Pakistani military officials.
