Default German File-Sharing Site Shut Down, Owners Arrested

Fight with file-sharing websites seems to be acute both in the United States and Europe. A few days ago, German press has reported the closure of a major cyberlocker website in the country.

Media reports reveal that shutdown process was led by Dresden Attorney General’s office after the complaint filed by a German copyright agency called GVU. The move also included the arrest of the operators of the file-sharing site who have been charged with uploading over 10,000 copyrighted films to Kino.to – the service they were accused of collaborating with through a paid affiliate program.

Dresden Attorney General’s office admitted that they had closed down the website in response to a complaint made by the Germany’s copyright agency, GVU. Meanwhile, the operators of the service were arrested. According to media reports, the country’s authorities have arrested “Maik P”, perhaps Maik P?tzold, the owner of the Skyload.net domain. Besides, they also arrested “Marcel E”, who is presumably Marcel Edler, mentioned along with P?tzold as a contact for Skyload.net’s hosting provider, Virtuell-host.de. By the way, the latter is for some reason also currently offline.

At the end of 2011, within the frames of perhaps the largest European operation against online piracy, the 27-year-old operator of film streaming service called Kino.to (the latter was also later closed down) was sentenced to 3 years of jail time in response to the charges of criminal copyright violation. Meanwhile, the authorities now claim that after Kino.to’s shutdown, Skyload.net continued the uploading, this time using a number of other websites like KinoX.to.
