to

if ($today >= $date) {$colorPrefix = '<span style="background-color:red;">'; $colorSuffix = '</span>';}

should be <span style="background-color:red;">

however, I'd still suggest to assign a class dynamically to the tr tag and play with CSS separately, but thats just my opinion

The reason I didn't is he didn't mention he was using any css anyhwere. So rather than ass u me anything I gave him what he asked for exactly.
