Yes they just giving bullshit excuses. They want to make money, simple as that. Hence they decreased download speed. Ultimately they are the 1s making lots of money through premium sales.

Anyway if they realy want to drive away pirates, they better shut their site, simple as that.

Pirates will never leave, they'll pwn rapidshare lol.

    It begins...
"We're trying to drive away the pirates by restricting download speeds, but not deleting files. Files and uploader accounts still exist. So you can just pay us some cash and get them copyrighted files at full speeds."

    Translates to:
"We want money, but we'll dress up our agenda in a way that appeals to the anti-piracy groups."

Text with make up. Better that than nothing tho. RapidShare is just trying to look nice. If you want to download application from RS(usually 1Gb+) you need premium account so, this is useless/crap.

next thing that will happen, is limit of 200MB, like they had once.... I already said this will happen, before megaupload failed, long time ago...

Rapidshare has been pretty much dead since they stopped paying this is no big loss really. If they want to do something just block US IPs. Download speed from Rapidshare has always been crap for me 45k to 75k a sec

I still don't get it. Download/Upload speed does not have a direct connection with piracy.

I think this is an excellent move on Rapidshare's part. If it is true that there is a direct correlation between free downloads and piracy, then indeed reducing the speed should help deter the downloaders.

If on the other hand the intention is to push people towars paying for their premium service, and they actually SIGN UP, then it is another well deserved signal to the media companies that people ARE willing to pay for content, and probably a reasonable amount too ($30 - $50 /month maybe?), but people want better and more flexible delivery methods, and few ads.

If people are willing to pay, then the media companies need to adjust their model to suit today's consumer.

Megaupload was following rules like any other filehost. Some people including rapidshare don't like megaupload's huge success so they paid officials to shut it down.

Now rapidshare is reducing speeds just to see more premiums as there is no correlation between reducing speeds and keeping pirates away.
