[28/5/08]#2 What.CD, SumoTracker, BTMon, and FullDls Targeted by CRIA
2nd Article regarding this issue.
MoxioColo, the ISP for each of the BitTorrent tracker sites, was recently served with cease and desist orders.
It looks like things are heating up again in Canada for BitTorrent tracker sites and their users with recent news that Moxio Colo, the ISP for a number of major BitTorrent tracker sites including: What.cd, SumoTorrent, BTMon and FullDls, has been served with cease and desist orders from the CRIA.
If you recall, it was the CRIA whom was previously able to pressure an ISP to close another fabled Canada-based BitTorrent tracker site - Demonoid - which even attempted to block Canadian visitors in order to avoid legal action. The CRIA still threatened the ISP renting servers to the site and ultimately led to Demonoid finding a new host in the Ukraine instead.
This time however, things may be different for MixioColo plans to stand up to the CRIA. In an interview with TorrentFreak, Sean Corbin, CEO of Moxie Communications notes:
We will not be following the request and will be fighting for the rights of our clients as to date laws in Canada protect them. We have looked into the matter and from what we understand these sites are not breaking any laws in Canada. If we do not comply they might bring legal action against Moxie Communications, as they believe without us these sites could not do what they do so therefore we are as bad as they are.
It's about time a Canadian ISP stood up to the CRIA.
