Apple giving $10,000 for 25 billionth App Store download

Launched in July 2008, Apple's iOS App Store has changed the face of software distribution. Everyone from large companies to small one person development teams can now upload an app to the App Store and have it published to tens of millions of potential customers. It has literally created a whole new sub-section of the software industry and paved the way for other efforts such as the Android Market, the Windows Phone Marketplace and the upcoming Windows Store feature for Windows 8.

Today, Apple launched a new web page that is counting down to when the 25 billionth download from the App Store happens. Apple broke the 10 billionth app mark just over a year ago on January 22, 2011, and as they did last year, Apple is holding a contest to mark the occasion. When the 25 billionth app is downloaded, Apple will give away a $10,000 gift card to one lucky person.

Thankfully, you don't have to be the person who actually downloads that app to win the gift card. Apple has a contest page where you can enter your information so you can be eligible for the prize. You might want to hurry, however: the app download page countdown is moving quickly and there may only be a few more days before that 25 billionth mark is reached.
