Hong Kong freezes $42 mln in Megaupload raids
Hong Kong, Jan 21, 2012 (AFP) - - Hong Kong Customs officers have raided offices, domestic premises and luxury hotel suites as part of a worldwide FBI Internet piracy investigation into file-sharing site Megaupload.com.
One hundred officers took part in the raids Friday which seized a large amount of digital evidence and uncovered about HK$330 million ($42 million) in suspected crime proceeds, Customs said.
"The assets have been frozen in accordance with related ordinances. The operation is ongoing," it said in a statement.
Officers raided hotel suites costing HK$100,000 a day equipped with high-speed servers and large television screens which were suspected to be connected to the case.
Megaupload's website was shut down Thursday by US authorities who accuse it of one of the largest cases of copyright theft ever.

the owner wasnt a hk citizen ..so he is fried.
Anyway, the case against megaupload s$%k big time and ..was a big abuse by US justice department..
And i repeat, has NOTHING to do with piracy, megaupoad prepared to open a service like itunes , that would've give back to artists 90% of they record sales income.
Imagine a service like that carried by megaupload, one of the most accesed sites in the world.
That wouldve got big losses in they fat pockets and the REAL money hungry cash whores could not accept that.. and bang, mu illegaly was shut down... by the us law.
Dont be blind, has nothing to do with warez .. Because who dont wanna pay ( the poor people, especialy) would not pay with or without megaupload.
To bad, because a weapon that could've feed a lot of musicians and would've helped them to be independent and much better was closed down.
