How can you be sure it was RIAA? Maybe just a prank call?

like TheShadowOne/Brandon said, this is common if u download from torrents/p2p.

RIAA has a lot of popular torrents disguised and seeding themselves, and when you download they get your ip. usually they just launch a complaint to your isp, but a few times depending on the situation, they go to the extreme and sue.

We have all seen how Digiprotect, makes profit after profit by applying this simple method to trap newbie downloaders. you can say, this is like a "pirate honeypot". You can read here the interview, where they revealed, how they have a made successful, profitable business out of piracy and newbie pirates.

Truly after seeing this, makes you wonder who the real scumbags are...

it doesnt matter bcos ISP's can see all the connections you make to peers.. and mpaa are crawling private trackers neway... best thing to do it get a seedbox or just use rapidshare to download... so you only make connections via http.

Just avoid public trackers ... or private trackers .... or even ditch p2p and use file hosts

use a vpn or proxy, vpn is your best bet, or if your doing torrents. just get torrentflux and a webhost (that allows torrentflux) and u can download direct from your host at a faster speed and your host can do the seeding. im using santrex and they have unmetered bandwidth and support TF on some packages.
as for p2p apps like ares or limewire, frostwire etc. just stay away they are nothing but bad news, viruses, fake stuff, child porn and whatnot. just use direct downloads from ezyfile or rapidshare or soemthing. saves you trouble. but get a vpn so you are less likely to get cought. virtual private servers work as well
