AC3 supports proper 5.1 surround sound and AAC doesn't (as far as I know).

AAC is far superior than ac3,and it does support 5.1, but ac3 is kept for compatibility with older players.
AAC supports up to 96KHz sampling rates, and upto 48 channels
so, basically AAC is far better than ac3 it is a replacement for standard mp3, but on steroids.

ac3 is like mpeg2.portablity + support
aac is like x264. not wide range of devices(yet) but when its supported(which will be soon),its gonna rock!

most people still use ac3 nowadays for higher audio quality, some use aac for its amazing compression.
