free domain and webhosting from the same provider?

i have come across many sites where they provide free domains and paid webhosting...for example IPAGE.com ...is it safe??
Also i came across many comments saying do not go for that feature...why is that??what to do??

Yes, don't go with them.

Reason:
You are not able to transfer your domain to other host, you need one code for transfering domain, sure they will give it to you, but after contract period, mostly contract period is not less than 2 years......

or they ask for extra money.

so my suggestion:
avoid that shit...

i don't think free domain is good ,coz domain is important,you should spent some buck and registered one in godaddy or name.com

i think $1.18 .com doamin is available in godaddy (check for coupon code in this site - Yes somebody posted it here...)

Note:
If you are going to start warez blog or something not legal means avoid godaddy.
Godaddy will close your site if they got tons of infringement mail...

choose name.com, namecheap.com (i have domains in name.com)
