Check your phrase in phrase manager. You may have it backwards.

Go into your admincp. Click on Languages and Phrases.
Click search phrases. Copy and paste this into search for text:

there_are_x

Then make sure you click "Phrase Text and Phrase Variable Name" and click Find.

You will see two phrases and you will need to edit both on the right side by clicking Edit.

In the white box towards the bottom, copy and paste this to it:

For: there_are_x_online
Put this into the box:

There are currently <a href="online.php">{1} users online</a>.

And click Save.

For: there_are_x_y_online_link
Put this into the box:

There are currently <a href="online.php{2}">{1} users online</a>.

And click Save.

This is assuming that you are using vB4.

That should fix your problem.
